Built by Marcus Agrippa, son in law of the Emperor Augustus, as a temple, and after a fire rebuilt in 125 Ad by Hadrian on the site of an earlier building. It was converted into a catholic church by Boniface IV in the early 7th century.
It's 43 m (142ft) high and wide, a perfect sphere resting in a cylinder. Its oculus is very famous: it's the only one source of natural light, a round opening in the right center of the dome (27ft diameter), open to the sky. And what happen if it's raining? Well, don't worry, the floor is gentle sloped to allow the runoff of rainwater.
Here's some tourist tips. This fascinating monument is daily open to the public, the last admission is at 7,15 p.m. There is no ticket or security screening. It's the burial place of of several celebrated Italians, like Raphael and Vittorio Emanuele II. It's the ideal landmark to visit in the evening, before finding a traditional restaurant close by.
